European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
