Ex-PM Alexis Tsipras Asserts Yanis Varoufakis Was ‘Inappropriate’ as Greek Finance Minister During Debt Crisis

Within his newly released personal account, called Ithaki, the former premier Tsipras spares no criticism as he examines the turbulent era during Greece's economic turmoil.

A Controversial Choice

In Tsipras's version, Tsipras chose that unorthodox academic Varoufakis as the finance minister primarily due to the latter's worldwide fame along with his “extremely attractive” skills as a public orator.

“In reality, he was, actually, more of a star and less of an economist,” recalled the 51-year-old.

Clashing Agendas

The former leader alleges that Varoufakis possessed a personal motives which included promoting his books and experimenting with his theories on the nation instead of genuinely advocating the country's financial survival.

Tsipras explained that the discussions to prevent bankruptcy became “not just a way to secure improved terms for Greece. They were an experiment, a monumental opportunity to demonstrate the truth of his ideas.”

Critical Negotiations

Amid rollercoaster negotiations, Greece found itself dangerously close to leaving the eurozone.

On the line lay both Greece's destiny but also the harsh austerity policies required in return for rescue loans from foreign lenders.

Failed Alternatives

Attempts to secure financing from other sources, such as a desperate appeal to the Kremlin to buy Greek government bonds, were rejected.

Helping the indebted country was equivalent to tossing cash into the garbage, Putin reportedly told his Greek counterpart during their meeting.

Referendum Followed by Reversal

In July 2015, the excoriating bailout terms were subjected to a public vote, a move that plunged the EU into a deeper existential crisis.

Even though the referendum was carried decisively by those who opposed austerity, Tsipras had little option to ignore the result then agree to a bailout package with creditors which proved to be tougher.

Breaking Point

The ex-PM claimed that he started questioning his finance minister relatively soon.

“Varoufakis was the public image of negotiation, the man who attracted media attention, who appeared on the front pages of publications the world over … he gave the impression he relished the spotlight.”

When Varoufakis proposed a contingency plan involving establishing a secondary currency as well as issuing coupons to retirees, the leader knew it was the end questioning Varoufakis: “Are you serious?”

Lasting Rebuke

Within the book, the author concludes that his former ally had proved himself “unsuitable for a deal that required complex and sensitive management.”

Tsipras also wrote that Varoufakis's confrontational style made him increasingly isolated with colleagues, endangered the country, while assisted hawks who were advocating a Greek exit from the euro.

This retelling of events has been met with anger along with stunned disbelief in some quarters, while Varoufakis has kept a conspicuous quiet regarding these claims.
