The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected the Gap Among Rock Fans

It has been two decades after the legendary game hit the market in North America, offering players everywhere the tools to feel like a rock star. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who's nailed the epic four-minute instrumental break in front of a packed living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes moving along the screen in time with a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, producing the sensation of a genuine performance.

Harmonix previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a remarkable impact for many musicians included, introducing classic bands to a new generation of younger players.

Michael Dornbrook, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the early financial challenges in securing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded all the music since the cost was so high,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases and radio play were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents reached out and thanked us for introducing their kids to the music they adored. It evolved into an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish group one featured act had their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game revived older hits back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, but then once it got included in the game and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated the genre, and got rid of the outdated tag. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still not available stateside, meaning the game was a key medium of discovery for the group during their US tour opening for AC/DC. “Their crew were playing Never Too Late during travel, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Titles and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated game editions that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated lore, visuals and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said to have made the band greater revenue than any of their records. It moved more than 500,000 units upon release, and sales of their songs rose significantly at a time as the industry was already collapsing.

The series continues to inspire quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, a streamer completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar mechanics but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging even in the hardest setting, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to use actual weapons and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

The band previously wrapped up a profitable run when Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I recall the record label informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he says. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I felt otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “Should you just listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

The best marketing, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs like the DJ version, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, except for a short-lived revival in 2015.

Games such as Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, with expectations of something from the founders in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought those games could be similar to sports games where you can releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to continue with new generations.”
