The Video Platform Offers The Community Power to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Timelines

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the amount of AI-made content appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the company announced that it presently contains over 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a full-scale release. This shift coincides with a rise in AI content, driven by recent content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this material is considered “AI slop”, a term for substandard, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers appreciate content produced via AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to offer the community the ability to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service announced that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as artificially created. Collectively, over 100 m media items are added to the app every day, making AI-generated material a minor portion of its overall inventory.

User Control Features

Users will be capable of limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the topic control option in the application and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that are already be adjusted under the tool include news, clothing, beauty, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s policies require content makers to tag “realistic” artificially created content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of public figures or emergencies. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will henceforth add an artificially created watermark to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting artificial media. This action is aimed to deter users from trying to bypass the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar educational fund for professionals and groups to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This project will support educational bodies dedicated to educating computer science.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has justified its content review process, amid controversy over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in the UK. It is set to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection division in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but automated tools can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to intervention by its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
