Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
